Bugholz Bathtub Nr. 5 oiled
The technique
The bathtubs are made from water resisting European wood sorts such as the European larch, the common oak or the Spanish chestnut. The tree that suits best is selected at the sawmill
and cut to my demand. Now I select the wood out of the tree trunk that suits me best
for the job and cut the raw planks for the Bathtub.
In the old-fashioned way of wooden boat building, the frames and planks used to be softened up by using steam and were then pressed into shape.
I have picked up and refined this ancient technique: The freshly sawn wood is sunk in a large tub for quite a while and flushed frequently with fresh water. When the wood doesn’t float any more its cooked in a kind of oversized pressured water boiler until it’s softened up and can be pressed into forms and then dried.
When the planks have settled in their new form they are carefully selected and assembled to three-dimensionally shaped bathtub bottoms.
The under side is coated with modern techniques to ensure a waterproof lifetime.
The melange of the anciant and modern techniques enables the construction of these bathtubs
in a superb quality and durability of more then 20 years.
The survace of the tub may be treated withe a special wood penetrating oil. That will keep a deeper view int the wood grain texture available.
However there is no need for this procedure to gard the wood quality.
If you dont feel like giving youre Tub a special treatment. Thats fine. The survace will get a patina. Simply rinse the tub wit warm water.
